Iowa Lottery CEO, Terry Rich, recently traveled to Washington D.C. to appeal to congress to reject proposals for federal regulation for online gambling.
The Iowa Lottery actually doesn't have any plans to offer online gambling in the immediate future, but it's worried about the fact the proposed changes could end up preventing them from doing so in the future. Rick feels states should be allowed to individually decide what is best for them and their constituents.
"The lotteries emphasized that the federal government should not infringe on states’ rights to implement and to regulate Internet gaming within their own borders," Rich stated in a report send to the Iowa Legislature’s Government Oversight Committee after his visit to the capitol. "Lottery staff also stressed that individual states are best equipped to respond to their citizens’ unique local preferences and decide what, if any, intrastate gaming should occur within their jurisdictions.”
Rich also pointed out the importance of funds generated from lottery, as it provides funding for a wide variety of activities from education to supporting less fortunate members of the community.
"The Iowa Lottery has raised more than $1.4 billion for vital causes, including economic development, education and support for Iowa veterans and their families," Rich added. "Across the nation, in 2011 alone, lotteries provided $25 billion in net profits to local causes. In short, state lotteries are funding important missions. Congress should not enact legislation that supersedes state authority and that selects winners and losers.”
